In honor of this site's namesake, I'd like to formally introduce Fresnotes — a useless, occasional feature that will attempt to list all the times Fresno or the Central Valley is mentioned in pop culture. (Yes, Katy, that may include Modesto.) This idea is stolen from my friend Carrie, who once wanted to pitch the idea to a magazine. (Which magazine, I have no clue. Modern Agriculture?) Our first entry is a no-brainer: A quote from the epic 1986 CBS miniseries "Fresno," starring Carol Burnett as the station-wagon-driving queen of the Kensington raisin dynasty. It costarred Dabney Coleman, Charles Grodin and a young, pre-"Seinfeld" Michael Richards, as well as former Fresno Mayor Dale Doig (who as I recall, looked like an absolute tool in his cameo).
"I was too busy... raising Cain." — Burnett.

I Believe in a Thing Called Metal

Much thanks to my iPod-wielding roommate GR for introducing our house to The Darkness, a howling pack of British retro-metal gods who invade New York City Friday with a sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom. Unfortunately, my introduction wasn't soon enough. I don't have a ticket. Bastards.
To call them a next-generation Spinal Tap would be selling these guys short. But I do hear a little bit of Cheap Trick, Queensryche, Queen and Dokken. And yeah, that's a good thing. Rolling Stone gives them three stars, but it's the videos that really sold me... fog machines, hundreds of Marshall stacks, blatant pixelated frontman nudity and guitars that double as shotguns. Priceless.

Painful Quote of the Day

"We're going to keep playing these games until they get rid of me." — Fresno State Coach Pat Hill, before breaking out into song: "Oklahoooma... OK!"

Congratulations, Mr. Dunton
"Many of our people participate in a variety of agency-sponsored charity and community relations activities. In recognition of their volunteer involvement, the "Golin/Harris Giving Back Award" is presented annually to the staff member who distinguishes himself or herself as someone who "gives back" to the community."
